Asahi Kasei commences operations at Duranol polycarbonatediol plant, China28 November 2014
Asahi Kasei Chemicals has commenced operations at its Duranol polycarbonatediol (PCD) facility in China.
The new facility will complement the company's existing PCD plant in Kurashiki, Okayama, Japan.
The plant will produce 3,000t of PCD each year under the Duranol brand, which is used as a precursor for the production of polyurethanes, increasing the company's total annual capacity to 6,000t.
PCD is mainly used in polyurethanes for synthetic leather in automotive interiors, polyurethane coatings, and UV-curable polyurethanes.
Asahi Kasei said that demand for PCD has been increasing worldwide due to the market transition towards higher-performance polyurethane.
Duranol features greater compatibility than ordinary PCD and enables polyurethanes to be obtained with greater softness than ordinary PCD, the company said.
The China facility will allow Asahi Kasei to cater to the increasing demand with a stable supply infrastructure in Asia and strengthen the company's presence as a major supplier of functional materials to polyurethanes manufacturers, including Duranate HDI-based polyisocyanate.
